Andrew W. K. - The Wolf
Ok, We're going to get one thing straight right off the bat. I think that Andrew W.K. could singlehandedly bring all that is music to a bitter bloody end all by himself. Unfortunately he has a lot of help from alot of other people, bands labels, etc. With that out of the way now I will give you a review that is objective as I can possibly get. I think I got this cd just for the look of pain that I would give knowing I would actually have to listen to it and review it((GRRR)). We have on the plate a cd by one Andrew W.K. This is his latest release entitled The Wolf. Despite having the disposition that this would be the worst hunk of crap ever I actually gave it a fair shot, in hopes to find some redeeming quality. When all was said and done I managed to find some good in it. The music is enjoyable and upbeat. It has a very eighties feel to it, like listening to power ballads. Everything is big and makes for good dancing. The lyrics are easy to learn for those of you who enjoy singing along real loud. The songs can be very catchy. It is good to listen to in stereo too. Track 3 especially is a very good song to listen to with headphones on. This album is definently one you can 'rock out' to. A lot of the guitar solos are really good too. Ok now comes the fun part. I was going to try to listen to this about ten good times to get the feel for it. I started to write this about my fourth listen into it. I was afraid I would start losing having my brain sucked out at any moment. As cool as a piano is in a rock band. It gets REALLY old if you only play ONE!!! damn thing. It didn't fucking change from the last album. I don't know who the fools are that let someone get away with making the exact same album TWICE. Especially one as shitty as these. The crappy pianos make it sound like I am listening to chariots of fire... with someone saying party every five seconds. My god, just let me listen to the music.. the lyrics are hurty. It's almost like listening to a rock opera, with someone saying party every five seconds. I could run with this all day. It's really bad. I feel bad giving so much attention to the negatives. The good things really were good despite how much I actually hate it. Track(s) of Love: The first song that caught my attention was track 5, Never Let Down. It sounds like an old throwback. It almost reminds me off a classic butt rock dong you just want to sing over and over again. Making slow motion rock out signs and pretending your all emotional about a song. You know what I mean. The guitars are good too. For this album its a bit of a slower song amidst a sea of fast tempo beats. After multiple listens I also discovered that Tracks 3, Tear It Up, and Track 12, I Love Music, were also exceptional tracks. Tear It Up is a heavier song on the album. It's crunchy and sounds good in stereo. It has a very interesting opening and the song Is probably the best it is going to get for being an Andrew W.K. song. It has some good effects and Andrew is growling wich is kind of a neat change from the endless chanting of eightbillion people that there usually is, althgouh the song is definently chock full of that if you feel you aren't getting enough. It Is definently worth multiple listens, however, it might get stuck in your head. I Love Music is the last track on the album. I have this theory that if there are two good songs on the album they are usually going to be the title track or the last song. It's not a 100% garuntee, but I have found it to happen more often than not. I think that this is the case with I Love Music. It usues a very catchy design and the echo effect of the song makes it really enjoyable to listen to. The beat is really catchy and over all it is a solid way to end the album. If I was forced to choose one track off this album I would pick Track 3, Tear It Up. I Love Music, track 12, would be in a close second though. Track(s) of Doom: Despite all the plethera of crap that is Andrew W.K.'s The Wolf, it was surprisingly easy to find one song that really stood out as THE worst. Track 8, Make Sex, is barely a song. There's something very wrong about chanting the phrase make sex over and over again... and the cheesy laser effects really help drive in that last nail. I think jabbing toothpicks in my eyes then setting myself on fire would be more enjoyable then trying to fathom listening to this song again. Track 9, Totally Stupid, came in a close second. It's only redeeming quality was how well it expressed the theme of the album on a very basic level. And now it is time for the final marks. Despite what I've been told and actually listening to the album I am not impressed. I have been told that he has the most amazing live performance of all time. Well it doesn't transfer to he cd. I am just not FEELING it. A lobotomy might help, although I feel like I had one after I got done listening to this record. The only thing I could do was drool on myself and mumble 'party'. I am going to stop right now. I feel that I have blasted this piece of crap too much already. I don't want anyone thinking I am completely heartless now. On a scale that ranges from -5 to 5 I give it a -4. Really awfull, but I didn't have to commit ritual seppoku beacuse I came within a mile radius of it. I keep the wakasashi close by though, just incase.
