Bad Larry - No Deal
Bad Larry is the next ska band on the list. They are from Warwick, Rhode Island, but it took me too long to find that out so they are really from a secluded back alley in Reno, Nevada. They live there as hermits and play ska music a capella, using paper towel tubes as horns, for pennies and half eaten candy bars. I think this may be a trend, at least I hope it isn't, but when I put on No Deal, I was not impressed by the first song. I gave it a chance and several listens and still... nothing. We shall see if this is something that continues and if it is, I urge ska bands out there to PLEASE, make that first song a good one. On that note I think that things really start to pick up at about the third song, Only You. It picks up a bit and you can see what they are capable of. The next few songs down the line have a little bit of diversety and give you a pretty decent cross section of their abilities. They have some peppy songs and some slower songs as well. I really like the energy they are capable of. Ska Tissue and B-side. They also have some campier songs and some more generic songs. I think I could probably recommend this to the average ska fan. I can't really place who they sound like. I wouldn't exactly call them unique in their style, but they do have a flavor that is their own. Ask Boston, she could probably tell you. Lets get on with the track picks. Track(s) of Love: Track 3: Only You was the first one to catch my attention. It is a slower song, almost having reggae feel to it. The other track that really caught my attention was Track 7: B-side. It also starts out slow, but i really like the intensity they put into it at the end of the song. If they could do this on every song, I think they could be very good. I wish they would I would have been more into the album. I definently think this is the best song on the album. Track(s) of Doom: There are a few generic songs that, while I have no particular hate against, just kind of pass by me. Too many to name, but be warned for they are out there. My Track of Doom is Track 8: Label. I understand what it is, but it is just really bad. I don't like the flow the music and the lyrics irritate me. I am listening to it right now and I am getting pissed off just with it being on. Now it's time for the final marks. On a scale that goes from -5 to 5 I give this album a -2. I can say that they have managed to write a song that got stuck in my head. While that is an impressive feat, the album certainly is better. I am not sure if subsequent albums will improve the way i think they are capable of and my lake of faith in them has given them such a poor mark.
