Kevin Goes 2 College - Always Never the Same
I have recently been assigned the pleasure of destroying the hopes and dream of several local ska bands for my next batch of reviews. Our first victim is Kevin Goes 2 (yes 2 not Two) College, a nifty little band from the country of TEXAS. I have never heard of them before this day (You will be hearing that a lot for these next couple of reviews) but they do have a nice website for me to look them up on. Now the review. At first I was skeptical of hearing a female singer. Not because I don't like female singers but for some reason my first instinct was "I swear if this is as annoying as Dance Hall Crashers....." Luckily that was not the case. Vocalist Jen Cavazos has a very nice voice, even and fitting well with the music. Not annoying at all. My first listen I have to say It gets progressively better a the E.P. goes on. It starts off fairly generic with a little catchy pop number that I was quick to blow off and will probably continue to. Upon further reviews I stand by what I said. Alot of the horns are your standard ska horns and it offers very little as far as a diversion from it. I think that if Jen was not on vocals the sound would be completely uninteresting. She does a good job and fits well with what they are doing. I do see promise though. Towards the back of the album on songs like Guilty Pleasure and Reflections have some interesting horns and become seemingly more developed. I like alot of depth to my music and I find that Kevin Goes 2 College is definently capable of it. Over all I Think they are ok, but have the potential to be good. Track(s) of Love: There are a few tracks on the album I like. I would like to think that any person given enough time and chances should be able to write one song that could be enjoyed. I am not putting Kevin Goes 2 College in this category, but I feel it is a fair point as I have had at least one Track of Love on everything I have reviewed. Track 7: Reflections, and Tracks 5 & 6: Never Give Up and Guilty Pleasure respectively are all fine songs. I think that if I had to choose it would easily be Track 7: Reflections, as it has the most depth in my opinion. Track(s) of Doom: The first two tracks, Track 1: Tree of Might and Track2: Days of the Week are both very generic and go on the Doom List. Now it's time for the final marks. On a scale that goes from -5 to 5 I give this album a -1. Not all that impressive, but it certainly has potential. We shall see if their next outting shows them harness it or fall into the depths of despair with so many others.
